Lay

All lay people who assist or lead services regularly should hold an authority from the Archbishop. All lay workers who are considered part of a parish’s ministry team and are members of staff whether paid or unpaid should also hold an authority from the Archbishop for this work.

The Deaconesses, Readers and Other Lay Persons ordinance governs the authorisation of lay people along with the lay ministry Regulations. Please click on the links below to download an Application for Archbishop’s Authority.

Once the application has been completed by the incumbent and the applicant, the form is to be forwarded to the Diocesan Registry. Once the application has been received a confidential lifestyle questionnaire along with a letter will be sent to the applicant. The applicant will need to discuss their questionnaire, usually with the Regional Bishop or Archdeacon or a member of the Diocesan Women’s Ministry Team at a meeting.

Once a clear response has been received from the Professional Standards Unit, the application will be sent for approval to the Regional Bishop and an authority will be issued, and forwarded to the incumbent.

Lay workers will only need to complete this confidential questionnaire once. For those who are already authorised this will need to be completed when applying for a renewal of an existing authority. To view this questionnaire, please click the link below.

Refer to the Deaconesses, Readers and Other Lay Persons Ordinance 1981 and the Regulations for Lay Ministry.
